Baptists of Iran
by Abbas Tahvilda
All the great civilizations are of divine origin. Iran, in its diversity and authenticity, is one of the best examples of cultural cooperation and dialogue between the civilizations as well as a melting pot of various religions. This book is part of a collection called: Iran, Motherland of Religions. During three years, Abbas Tahvildar, the photographer, has worked inside the Sabbehi (Baptists) Community in order to make a complete survey of John the Baptist's followers. Mandaeans are the followers of John the Baptist. About 25 thousands of them live in Iran on the sheers of the river Karoun in Khouzestan province. The author has presented the history, thoughts, rituals rules of official baptism, the prayers (Baraxeh), the ablutions (Resameh), and Panjeh (5 days) auspicious of Mandaeans comprehensively, with the help of the magnificent and to-the-point photographs by Abbas Tahvildar. The book consists of seven chapters regarding the Mandaeans' life and ceremonies, namely: Social life, Baptism, In Memorial Ceremonies, Bird Slaughtering, Prayer, Marriage, Five Auspicious Days.
